HDB Flat Orientation Part 1– A View on View |
|
I once visited my husband friend who proudly showoff his new, swanky decorated flat. It is unfortunate that while we were there, he had to keep his curtain drawn close all the time. Who could blame him as the view would have brought us full access to his neighbor’s living room. It is no exaggeration to suggest that he used this opening as fire exit as the proximity was close enough to shake his neighbor’s hand. How about some decent privacy huh?
Since the late eighties and nineties, HDB’s thrifty approach towards land use resulted in many compactly designed flats with orientation that are best described as suffocating. Instead of slab blocks and the occasional 5-rm tower blocks found in older estate like Ang Mo Kio, where owners get to enjoy spacious views from their windows, HDB owners in swanky designed, award wining estates like Tampines, sometime get to savor their neighbors’ dinner choices. To add salt to the wound, we now have floor-length windows. What the point of these nifty features when all you see are bare-chested men parading in little more than knickers? We’re talking about privacy from window-to-window proximity here. Do let us have that, please.
